Aftercare instructions vary by technique and child. Use the written plan provided by the treating clinician rather than relying on general online advice. Contact the clinic or seek urgent care if you are worried about your baby.
1. Use the Written Aftercare Plan
Follow the instructions about clothing, nappies, bathing, pain relief, dressings and follow-up. Ask the clinic if any instruction is unclear.
2. Dressings and Gauze
Use any dressing, gauze or ointment only as directed by the treating clinician. Do not substitute a product or change the plan without advice.
3. Bleeding: When to Seek Help
A small amount of spotting may occur, but persistent or increasing bleeding requires urgent clinical advice. Seek emergency care if bleeding is heavy or your child is unwell.
4. Monitor Your Baby’s Wellbeing
Contact the clinic urgently for worsening redness or swelling, discharge, fever, increasing pain or persistent crying, difficulty passing urine, or a device that moves unexpectedly.
5. Cleaning and Nappy Changes
Follow the clinician’s instructions about cleaning, bathing and nappy changes. Do not forcibly retract skin or use products not recommended for your child.
What to Expect During Recovery
Some redness, swelling and discomfort can occur after circumcision, but the pattern and duration vary. The treating clinician should tell you what is expected for the technique used and what needs review.
Recovery time varies. Attend the planned follow-up and seek advice promptly if you are worried about your baby’s symptoms or general wellbeing.
